Introduction:

John 11 records an incident that is perhaps Jesus' greatest miracle, the raising of Lazarus from death.

Jesus could have reached Lazarus sooner after receiving word of his sickness, but He purposely delayed two days (John 11:6). This was going to be quite a lesson for the disciples. He told them this sickness was not unto death but so that the glory of God might be manifested (vs. 4). Finally, two days later, he suggested they all go back to Judea. This instantly caused fear in the hearts of the disciples. The last time He had been there an attempt had been made on His life (10:31-40); surely it was not safe to go back!

Jesus told the disciples that Lazarus was asleep; but after they argued again about going back, He told them plainly that he was dead. He was about to perform a big and impressive miracle to reveal His deity.
