THE LESSON BACKGROUND. This week’s lesson takes place on the day that Jesus rose from the dead. After He appeared to Mary Magdalene (see John 20:11-16), Jesus encountered two disciples who were travelling from Jerusalem back to Emmaus. He joined them on the trip but at this time, the LORD caused them not to be able to recognize Him; for “their eyes were holden that they should not know him” (see Luke 24:16). When they reached Emmaus, Jesus expounded on the Word of God concerning Himself (see Luke 24:27). During their fellowship with Jesus, “their eyes were opened and they knew Him and He vanished out of their sight” (see Luke 24:31). This experience led them to say to each other “Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?” (see Luke 24:32). Then the two disciples returned to Jerusalem to tell the other believers about their meeting with the risen LORD (see Luke 24:33). When they returned to Jerusalem, they found the other disciples meeting behind locked doors out of fear of the Jewish leadership (see John 20:19). However, they were told that the LORD had risen and had appeared to Peter (see Luke 24:34). Then the two Emmaus disciples told the others everything that had happened as they traveled home earlier that evening and how they finally recognized Jesus when they were breaking bread (see Luke 24:35). This is where our lesson begins.
