INTRODUCTION.

For some reason, many people tend to believe that they need to have some great talent or skill in order to serve the LORD. But in this week’s lesson, we see that God chose to use a simple Jewish man, a carpenter (see Matthew 13:55), to be the adopted or legal father of His own Son, Jesus. Joseph had no experience at fatherhood, for he had no other children at this time. Yet God gave him the honor of being the earthly father to the Messiah. Joseph was engaged to Mary, a young Jewish girl and they had not yet become intimate. But when the angel told Joseph that the young girl that he was engaged to was already pregnant, no doubt he was in a state of sorrow. Sometimes, God will use our sorrow to accomplish His ends; and in Joseph’s case, sorrow would lead to triumph when Mary would give birth to Jesus, the long awaited Messiah.
